eurydiceThe Alley Theater continues its otherworld adventures this season with its fifth mainstage production of the 2011-2012 season, Eurydice.  Eurydice is a beautifully re-imagined version of the Greek myth of Orpheus, constructed from poetry, music and imagination.

Sarah Ruhl updates the story by spinning the tale from Eurydice’s point of view.  Ms. Ruhl takes the audience through Eurydice’s death and the meeting of her father, who lives in the underworld.

Eurydice must decide between her beloved husband and a life in this world with her husband and life in the underworld with the special love of her father who has cared for her so lovingly.

The original myth tells of Orpheus, the magically talented musician who falls in love and weds the beautiful Eurydice.  When Eurydice dies suddenly, the grief-stricken Orpheus decides to follow her to the underworld to bring her back to the world above.

The play is a juxtaposition of emotions, genres, themes, and relationships.  Life and death.  Comedy and tragedy.  Paternal love and marital love.  Sorrow and joy.  Earth and the afterlife.  It is non-linear, beautiful and tragic.

Bringing the play to life is seasoned director, Kathi E.B. Ellis. Kathi is the perfect director for this production, as she thrives on creating cohesive and beautiful ensembles of actors, which she has done with this cast.

The play stars Alley Theater mainstay, Hallie Dizdarevic.  Hallie has starred in The Looking Glass Wars, Point Break LIVE, and Fight Girl Battle World at the Alley and is currently starring in Savage Rose Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Alley Theater’s own producing director, Scott Davis stars as Eurydice’s father.  The cast is rounded out nicely by Joel Mingo as Orpheus, Michael Mayes as the Lord of the Underworld, Clay Marshall, Ben Unwin and Scott Goodman are the three quirky “Stones” who serve as a modern Greek Chorus.

"...thoughtful exploration of the concept that comedy and tragedy are separated by the thinnest of margins and, therefore, worthwhile theatre." - theartslouisville.com

: The mission of the Alley Theater is to produce progressive theater and to provide an affordable venue for both traditional and experimental artists. The Alley Theater strives to include the entire community in its audiences and on its stage.

The Alley Theater was formed in 1993 for the purpose of fostering original alternative performance works in the Louisville area and to offer local productions of progressive, previously established theatrical productions.

The Alley resided in the Highlands area of Louisville and served that community for under 4 years. In December of 2007, The Alley Theater returned to Louisville in a new facility located within the City Block Entertainment complex. During that year The Alley Theater ran productions throughout 2008, to determine if an alternative theatrical cabaret would be viable in the Louisville area. The Alley saw its audience base grow exponentially in 2008 and determined that investing in a full-time performance and visual arts complex was the next step in its growth.

Sixteen years after The Alley Theater first debuted in the Highlands, the organization is proud to bring the community a new multi-functional performance venue.
