The Radio Plays by Douglas Adams, directed by Dana Hope
Actors. Microphones. Moog. Scripts. Towels? No, no towels. You’ll have to bring your own. (But you know that by now, don’t you?)
The Alley Theater will at least have the hardware in tow this November as it presents four episodes of the original The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy radio series live on stage! The Alley production aims to recreate the original recording conditions of the beloved Hitchhiker’s series. The cast will read from the scripts, their mic’d voices accompanied by the state-of-the-art (mind the 34-year gap) Moog synthesizer technology. Hear the Hitchhiker’s series as it was originally conceived!
Originally conceived in 1977, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy radio comedy series was broadcast in 1978 on BBC Radio 4 and came across the Atlantic to be heard on NPR and CBC radio. The show quickly became a hit, winning The Song Award (1979), The Society of Authors/Pye Awards “Best Programme for Young People” (1980), and became the only radio program ever nominated for the Hugo Awards for science fiction in 1979.
The program caused a sensation with listeners. One listener in India “strongly objected to ‘Robots taking part in a comedy show,’” and another remarked to the Radio Times that "In just about 50 years of radio and latterly TV listening and watching, this strikes me as the most fatuous, inane, childish, pointless, codswallopping drivel." Ringing endorsements such as these lead to adaptations in various media: novels, a video game, a BBC television series, and a 2005 feature film. With an enduring legacy across the cultural starscape, the Alley is proud to present the program that started it all!
